<Part 1>
Today, we will learn a technique that enhances both our speed and comprehension in reading! This is especially useful when studying or reading technical information(computer, science, economics, etc)
Skimming
Most would be confused... Skimming is a basic technique that most people know how to do... Jim Kwik's way of skimming may be quite different so stay tuned.
There is a study done on comparing two different reading methods.
1. Reading Twice
2. Skimming, then reading
Well, the results showed that the latter topped the other.
When we skim, we often get confused since we do not get the full infomation. Then, through this confusion, our brain creates questions on the porous information. Through these questions, our brain becomes more focused and stimulated, leading to an enhanced performance.
<Part 2>
There are three popular skimming techniques that people use.
1. Reading only the middle part of each line and advancing vertically down.
2. Reading in a zig-zag form.
3. Reading on line and reading the next line backwards, where you left off.
The third method is what Jim recommends, since you do not miss any words and it also saves time.
Reading backwards may be quite challenging when you read slowly, but once you reach about 800WPM, it will not matter since at these speeds, you would be taking whole lines at once, so it wouldn't matter if you read normally or backwards, it would all be the same.
Reading backwards will definitely create confusion, but through this confusion, you will achieve questions that heat up your brain for more desire for comprehension. Confusion creates questions, questions create purpose, purpose create comprehension!
Also, when you skim, do not forget to use your visual pacer.
When you train on reading, always do your 3 Rs(Read, wRite, Relate), activate your brain(infinity technique, super brain yoga, skimming). Take a brain break every 25~30 minutes for 5 minutes. Write(Take notes) for 5 minutes, speak for 3 minutes.
With enough practice and consistency, these techniques and trainings will boost your speed and comprehension dramatically!
